Small in Numbers but Big in Impact

”We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

They may be small in numbers but Nustar's impact in the community can be felt beyond St. James Parish.  Giving back not only means giving financial resources but contributing your time to your community through volunteering, both are important to Nustar.

In St. James Parish, employees from NuStar Energy – St. James Terminal have found a way to do both in their local community. With only 40 employees, they are making a huge difference through United Way and our partners.

Here are some ways:

  • 100 percent of their employees across America support local United Way’s

  • In St. James, they not only have 100 percent participation but also give at least 2 percent of their annual salary or more to the campaign.

  • Employees donated more than 1,131 pounds of food to one of our partner agencies – Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.  This will provide enough to feed over 952 individuals.

Nustar, as a company, cares about their employees and in return their employees are committed to giving back.  Their volunteers known as “NuStar Superstars” are active in their community and in 2019 contributed more than 83,000 volunteer hours to charitable and civic causes.  They choose United Way as their partner to reach out in their local communities.  100 percent of their employees donate to their local United Way campaign, and their average per capita contribution is among the highest across corporate America.  As a small community, St. James knows that many of their employees can rely on them in times of need.

Why United Way?

Marcelo Cornejo, St. James Manager, at the St. James Terminal believes that United Way meets the most critical needs of the local community.  He’s proud to say that his St. James employees have taken their United Way efforts even further by not only having 100 percent participation, but 100 percent of employees are giving at the Trailblazer level, which is 2 percent of their annual salary or more.  With Capital Area United Way serving 10-parishes this allows Nustar’s option of giving to more people.   UW provides different avenues to help the community and serves as a link between those in need of help and those who want to receive the help.

Cornejo sums up their efforts perfectly, “An individual can have a vision and lead, but a team can accomplish much more together and the impact is much greater for those in need as well as for those providing the help.”

By working together every day to accomplish goals and help those in need – Nustar is truly showing how to LIVE UNITED!
