A Connector: Capital Area United Way and the Community

Each day, Capital Area United Way supports the needs of our community by connecting our corporate partners with nonprofits in the 10-Parish area. Over the Mother’s Day weekend, we became the Great Connector for an impactful distribution with Catholic Charities and one our company partners Morgan Stanley.

This distribution first took place in 2021 as we began to come out of the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many people who struggled with reduced hours or layoffs, single mothers were impacted heavily during the pandemic, and the Morgan Stanley Women’s Leadership Council sought to help these women feel special during the Mother’s Day weekend.

The success of this event added to the momentum to make this an annual event, and it was once again held during the Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday, May 7, 2022. At Capital Area United Way, we leveraged long-standing partnerships and resources to round out this event. We once again had Catholic Charities identify the clients through their case managers, which resulted in 200 clients identified as recipients of this particular distribution.

Our partners at Shell and Nucor donated $25 gas cards to be distributed as gas prices put a major strain on the budgets of these women. Cajun Navy donated cleaning and personal hygiene items for us to make a care packages, and our partners at The Bridge Church Baton Rouge spent a Saturday in April at our office making these baskets.

Finally, we cannot have an event like this without our day of event volunteers, and the sponsor of this event, Morgan Stanley, had their Women’s Leadership Council out to volunteer that morning to load the vehicles and show these women how much they truly are appreciated on Mother’s Day.

As you can see, Capital Area United Way is truly the Great Connector in the community, connecting volunteers, corporate partners and nonprofits to do the work necessary in our community no matter the challenges.
